App for Dog Owners in Korea

May 1, 2024

In South Korea, the rise in pet ownership has led to an increased demand for pet-friendly restaurants and cafes. However, unlike in the U.S., where pet-friendly venues are more common, South Korea faces challenges in providing accessible and clearly marked pet-friendly spaces. This gap inspired the creation of the GOAMOGO app, designed to help users locate pet-friendly restaurants and cafes. Additionally, GOAMOGO introduces users to the sustainable and nutritional benefits of insect-based dog kibble, addressing the growing interest in eco-friendly and health-conscious pet care.

Problem Statement

As of 2024, 28.2% of households in South Korea owned pets, up from 23.7% in 2018. This increase in pet ownership has created a significant demand for pet-friendly facilities. Despite growing demand, the lack of pet-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and cafes remains a significant challenge for travelers with pets.

Second, traditional pet food production, particularly meat-based kibble, contributes significantly to environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion.

Solution Overview

  1. A mobile application that provides users with a comprehensive directory of pet-friendly restaurants and cafes across South Korea.

  2. A feature educating users on the nutritional and environmental benefits of using insect-based dog food, which includes improved gut health, allergy relief, and sustainable sourcing

Key Features

  1. Users should be able to search for pet-friendly venues and get access to its location

  2. A section providing detailed information on the benefits of edible insect dog food and treats, including nutritional advantages of different type of insects

  3. A feature allowing users to click and purchase the kibble directly

Design Process

Research: Reached out to various Korea-based companies specializing in insect-based kibble to gather insights on ingredient composition

Wireframing and Prototyping: Developed wireframes to visualize the app's layout and user flow, focusing on the User Experience and visual identity

Transferring Wireframes onto SwiftUI: Implemented the designed wireframes into SwiftUI to create a responsive user interface. This step involved translating the visual concepts into functional code

The first two screens on the left represent the initial iteration with a more playful color scheme, while the latter two reflect the redesigned branding—featuring a more grounded, nature-inspired palette that aligns with eco-friendly values.

Further implementation

  1. Integrating AI-powered NLP chatbot technology to personalize sustainable nutritional recommendations based on pets' specific health conditions.

  2. User-generated content: allow users to leave reviews and ratings for pet-friendly venues, including photos and comments about their experiences

  3. Implement a badge system to highlight venues that are highly rated to introduce a gamification element
